The front of our house has sported several arbor vitae for a very long time. They were scraggly and unmanageable so last year I chopped down all but one of them.
The last few weekends I've been digging up the stumps. Still one to go.
I their place I've either planted new or transplanted hostas which I seem to have good luck with. One of them I didn't know I had since it was under the remaining arbor vitae. I took advantage of the cooler weather and transplanted that one today.
After clearing out some vine like weeds I discovered two more hostas I didn't know I had. They'll stay where they are but I should mulch them or do something to help them grow better. Now my back and hands ache.
Right now the front of the house looks scraggly but give it a few years and it should look nice.
