Ubuntu is based on Debian - it's an apt-get system. You download .deb packages. Forget about unpacking tars and stuff - go check out the GUI for the apt system: Synaptics.
Synaptics should be in your System menu under Administration. When you start it up go to the Repositories and check the boxes for both Universe, Multiverse... I think there's a third but I don't remember it. Check for one called Multimedia or Marrilat - there's lots of goodies in there. Also, check for "Smart" install - it will cut down on dependancy problems when you download weird stuff. Now reload... TA-DA! Lots of software you can download and install at the click of a button.
Mark it to install then tell it to go! It will download, unpack and install the programs without (mostly) any problems.
