My folks told me stories of their families gathering butternuts when they were kids. The hard work to open them for the tiny nuts within and how their hands would get stained brown. You apparently need multiple trees in order to produce nuts as they can't self-pollinate

I've never seen one as they've all be cut down in my area over the years, probably by homeowners who don't want to deal with the resulting mess.
