Our kitchen has really weird lighting: fluorescent tube fixtures mounted onto the ceiling with a grid of clear plastic panels covering them.

Same. Except most if not all (perhaps "all") of the fluorescents are LEDs now. And I rent so not much I can do to change it, but it's the worst lighting ever, and, strangely enough, incredibly hard to see close-up with or take pictures by despite it glaring away overhead.
