The winter storm has passed... but...

.. we've had a lot of power outages. After 6 to 9 inches of heavy wet snow it closed the roads and brought down a lot of trees. Even though the roads are clear and dry most schools are still closed due to lack of power. Just walking around our neighborhood I noticed a lot of downed branches = we have some in the back yard. We were lucky - we didn't lose power or internet.

I think we really need to look at our infrastructure. Sometimes doing the simple stuff like clearing out trees that might fall onto power/cable lines would save *a lot* of time and money in the long run.

When a lot of places have bridges that are literally falling apart and in danger of collapse for lack of maintenance, I doubt there's money in most budgets for tree clearing...

That said, skimping on preventative maintenance gets very expensive later.

The local power company has been trying to keep up on tree trimming since the Ice Storm of '98. Branches/trees still come down on power lines. Stringing'em on poles is apparently cheaper than running'em undergroung, which would solve the tree limb issue, but then there are other issues then with underground conduit.
