I just recently came across the phrase 'Nazi bar' and I thought I'd share it.

It comes out of the complete thought that, "If you open up a bar and let the Nazi drink there, no one else will want to drink there and it will soon be known as the Nazi bar." The writer was talking about social media in general but Twitter comes to mind very quickly.

Now, we already have Nazi bars: Truth Media, Parler come to mind immediately, and I'm sure there's plenty of forums filled with right wing nut jobs (The Federalist Society, NRA) but these aren't mass media outlets. Twitter still is. How long it will remain that way is in doubt. An easy to use complete replacement of Twitter doesn't seem to be on the horizon but the rot is in there and it's getting pretty deep. People will keep using it as long as it's still working (hahahahah), there's no serious replacement and as long as the Nazi's are kept out of sight of Mr & Ms Suburbia. They'll keep going to the Nazi bar as long as it's not in their face. And so, the Nazi bar seeps into the everything it touches.

If you search on YouTube for maladamedialabs you'll find my channel. It's mostly me rescuing and resurrecting old computers. I'm a tiny channel. I don't post regularly or often, just when I've finished with a project that I've taken the time to video.

However, I got a request for help from the comments on one of my older videos. I had cleaned and resurrected an old Sony Vaio and posted my results. The machine is very old and weirdly built. The request was from someone trying to replace the CD drive for their uncle and hadn't a clue how to open up the box.

I still had the machine and quickly lashed up a 2 minute video on how to disassemble the Vaio and remove the CD drives. They were surprised and happy that I'd made a video just for them. I cut a lot of corners to get it done but I'm pleased to have helped out. It's really why I started documenting my trash bin computer rescues - to share my knowledge and save a few machines from going to waste.

It seems the iconic beer brand Bud Light has been slowly dying over the past few years. In a classic corporate move they try to rebrand the beer as more 'inclusive' and less 'frat boy'.
They got a trans 'influencer' by the name of Dylan to hawk the stuff. All the frat boy right-winger heads exploded.

Right wingers are such snowflakes.

Guys, I hate to tell you this but people aren't buying your beer because it tastes like piss water. It sucks. Let the brand die and brew better beer.

I don't drink anymore (or rarely do) and the last beer I had that I enjoyed was a locally brewed coffee stout. I don't remember if 'coffee' means it's dark as coffee (and it was) or it was brewed with coffee but it was *delicious*.

I saw Dylan's video where they introduced Bud Light. I was distracted by the fact that the beer cans are props (the cans are empty - listen when Dylan places the cans on the table) but the script was hilarious.

The makers of Bud Light are getting publicity - but I doubt if that will translate into sales that would save the brand. Mass produced piss water beer is failing all across the United States. Younger people are smoking pot and sipping wine and drinking local (real) beer. It's not a case of 'go woke go broke' but 'the brand is broke'.

Wake up and smell the coffee stout.

No spoilers.

I just finished Kingfisher's ( aka Ursula Vernon of 'Digger' fame) "The Hollow Places". It was pretty good if you like that type of thing. It had a nice build up, little bits of creepiness here and there, fun characters, a really horrifying (and grizzly) situation, some boss battles... and a happy ending. It made me examine a bit why I (occasionally) like to read horror novels.

I think it comes down to three factors:

1. The characters. You have to like the characters. In this novel the main characters are quirky, a bit damaged and very human. Faced with eldrich horrors they run away, have breakdowns, get wounded... and soldier on. I wanted to hug them.

2. The setting. There has to be some plausibility to the setting - even if it's bizarre. It can be far fetched and sci-fi or magical, but it has to make sense. (That's why I don't read Harry Potter books. Hogwarts makes *no* frelling sense. At all.)

3. The story. Or perhaps I should say, the writing. The writer has to lure you into the Scary Place and after you stop for a break (do not read this book after dark) you come back to the book wanting to know 'what happens next'. The characters are presented with A Problem. How do they solve it? What happens next? They also didn't act *completely stupid* when faced with a mind bending situation.

It's not a perfect book. At one point I almost shouted, "I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!" and the ending might have been a little pat but it was an enjoyable... if really really creepy... book.

Don't be distracted when they say the shooter was seeing a therapist...

An update from my last post about 'Linux problems':

A fresh install of Linux Mint on my old machine went flawlessly. There's still some setup left to do but everything went great.

Also, CPU upgrades for two trash-picked machines arrived. With SSDs and Windows 10 installed, they should make decent low end gaming systems. I'll try to flip them and make a little a money for my efforts. Probably not much but if break even I'll be happy.

I'm grateful for the coming weekend - I just feel so tired lately and really want a rest day. I probably won't get it as Saturday is the day I do housework but maybe I can get a few extra hours of sleep.

Fortunately, this doesn't affect my main machines - but on oldie I pieced together several years ago.

It's "The Craiger" - a box I *mostly* put together with Craig's list parts. It's an olddie... a Rampage motherboard sporting 8 gigs of RAM and a Q9500 quad core CPU. An SSD makes it speedy and an Nvidia GTX660 makes it almost game worthy... for older games. It was running Xubuntu 20.04 - updated from 18.04 and I wanted to update it to 22.04.

I ran the update and everything seemed to go okay. The upgrade seemed to take so I loaded up Firefox to get some added goodies off the web... and the program failed to start. Okay, install Chromium. That failed to start. Then I get a warning that my APT/SNAP database was corrupted.

WTF?

A reboot later... and it completely hung on booting. Did SNAP packages bork my system?

Okay, let's start with a fresh install - but let's try Linux Mint Debian Edition. I take my USB stick with a fresh copy of LMBE 5 ... and the motherboard is too old to boot from a USB.

Darn, I forgot about that. But hey! I'm totally Old School and burn a DVD. Cool. It installs okay although Firefox did lock up the system when installing Duckduckgo security add-on. A reboot fixed that. And...

No Nvidia driver? Oh, darn. They're going to start allowing that in the *next* edition of Debian. I could fiddle with config files... nah... that's why I switched to Ubuntu... you want non-free drivers? Ubuntu asks you if you want to install them... and it does! Debian... eh, no.

Don't get me wrong - I loved Debian. Stable, reliable. I just got tired of having to fiddle with config files and newer hardware not being seen.

Hey! I was going to make this a spare Ubuntu Studio machine! And I've got a DVD already burned! Boot the DVD and .... SNAP deamon failed? CUPS daemon failed?

WTF?

Doing a little digging in the Ubuntu forums and it looks like they're doing away with DVD booting. It might still work... but it may take a few times. Well that sucks. Yeah, I get it... USB boot to install is faster and DVD drives are getting old. Still... that sucks.

So... I've burned a DVD of the latest version of Linux Mint Cinnamon. I've been contemplating jumping to Mint because Ubuntu has gone all in with Gnome 3 (which I hate) and SNAPS (which are slow) so this will give me another chance to kick Mint around a bit. It's too late to try it tonight so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

I have a friend who runs a restaurant. He's also completely computer illiterate. I've given him two computers - one for personal use and one for the business. He called and said there were issues with the business computer- wrong date and time and video problems - so I loaded up some gear and headed out.

The system was located in the basement so I let myself in. Unfortunately, I missed the last stair going down and I took a tumble. I think the box of onions broke my fall. Fortunately, I didn't break anything - I'm just bruised - which at my age is a Good Thing.

I couldn't find anything wrong with the system but replaced the BIOS battery just in case it was failing and being unable to hold the date and time.

I got paid with whole wheat bagels and refried beans.

We had one for escaping slaves...

we may need one for women needing healthcare (abortions)...

we may need *another* for trans kids and their families.

I can tell you from personal experience that every trans adult was a trans kid.

F*cking Republicans. They claimed to be the party of 'freedom' and 'small government' when they want to be in everyone's bed, bathroom and bookshelf.

Every once in a while we'd smell a whiff of gas but only when the hot water heater was running. It was so diffuse I thought I was imagining it.

Ah, nope.

Finally got the plumber in and yep, the water heater is leaking gas. The heater is 11 years old, out of production, broke down over the summer and the parts are hard to get.

Estimated cost to fix: 4,000 dollars.

Estimated cost to replace: 6,500 dollars.

Thank dog we put money away for just such an emergency.

We're now poorer but have hot water.

My housemate relates a significant number of people where she works are out sick with COVID.

At my place of work most of the people I work with have come down with it. My boss actually called me at home before I left for work yesterday and told me to work remotely.

I did a home test and it was negative.

None of my co-workers seem to have been hit hard by it - everyone at work is vaccinated. However, I'm the only one in the building that still masked up.

I've seen very few people in public masking up. Guys... you may be tired of it... but it's not tired of infecting YOU.

Stay safe, people.

I changed my normal morning walk pattern (I hurt my back again) and coming up the sidewalk was Fluffy.

I don't know if it's the same skunk that has been stinking up the neighborhood lately but - they were a big one.

I stood still, feeling very calm observing Fluffy as it took a right turn into a driveway. I was able to watch it jump up a very low wall (it took a few moments) then disappear into someone's back yard.

I don't think should be out and about now - but it's been in the 30-40 degrees F locally.

So it's Super Bowl Sunday - that day when the blood-fest that is American football is on full capitalist display.

With the players sure to suffer injures that will plague their later years and white-riots in the streets for the fans, this excuse to make money off of brutality is... to put it mildly, not my cup of tea.

And let's not dwell to much on the homo-erotic nature of beefy, sweaty men jumping on top of each other, ripping their shirts off, tackling each other and reaching between their legs to grab the ball. All on national television! Yeah guys, get a room.

Let's add a little jingoistic 'Rah rah USA! USA!' with some Confederate subtext and it seems like a good day to watch *anything* else.

I'm a long time Linux user and I just installed... Windows 10 on a machine. It's a Dell Optiplex 990 that was destined for the rubbish. I got there first.

It took a little longer than it should have because... silly me, the BIOS was set for RAID and didn't see the fresh install at first. A few minutes puzzling over BIOS settings and things went okay. It did take a while to install on a 256 gig SSD - longer than a Linux install. The machine has 16 gigs of memory and an i5 clocking at 3.2 ghz with 4 cores/4 threads. I got a serious scare when I went to flash the BIOS and Windows took the opportunity to install some more updates and the machine seemed to hang - but everything turned out okay.

I should check the thermal paste. That was on the list but I just plain forgot.

Tomorrow I'm going to drop in a AMD RX580 graphics card and install drivers. After that I'll run some benchmarks. I'm hoping to flip this machine as a low end gaming system. I've got another Dell 990 that I might not put as much money or energy in and flip that too. I'm not trying to make a lot of money on this... just trying to make a *little* money to fee4 my habit of fixing up old systems.

I've got my eye on some mid-2010 Macbook Pros that they're talking about trashing at work. I haven't worked on Macs before so I'm eager to try them out. SSDs are a cheap update for the machines and I'll probably donate some to my church.

So... the Big News is what is apparently a long-endurance spy/reconn/weather balloon that might have come from China hovering over the midwest USA.

And all the right wing gun nuts are pulling out their penis extenders and shouting 'Shoot it down! Let me shoot it down!'. Right. At an estimated altitude of 60-80 thousand feet your little pew-pew bullets are just going to fall to earth with getting nearly high enough. They'll fall.... somewhere - maybe on someone's head. Like you care.

From the people who know balloons it appears to be some kind of observation balloon with something slung underneath. It looks like there's long arms with solar panels so it's designed to be up there a while. Solar panels can be made light but I'm guessing that this balloon is one of the large models because you'll need all the lift you can get. Let's run through the hair-brained schemes it could be used for:

Spying: ah... satellites are better and controllable. And have you ever heard of Google Maps?

Distribute lethal chemicals/viruses: balloons can't carry big cargo. At that height no matter how powerful the chemical the small amount it could carry would be diluted over miles and miles to nothing. Viruses? Same thing - add to the fact that at 80 thousand feet it's super cold. Nothing biological could survive.

So an errant weather/research balloon sounds entirely reasonable.

I'm sure the military has the resources to shoot it down. Why waste the energy? Helium balloons leak. Eventually, it will descend and can either be grappled by a helicopter (cheap) or will land on it's own (cheaper still). Then it can be safely inspected.

Yesh people, take a chill pill.

So... I've been looking into a different video editor: Davinci Resolve. It has a Linux version and it's free! It required a stiffer video card than the one I had (AMD 7700) so I bought a AMD RX 580 AU. It's a cut down version of the RX 580 but the performance is pretty close.

So I downloaded Resolve and followed the instructions.

And... nope, doesn't work.

Digging deeper Resolve only works with certain graphics cards and certain versions of Linux. That part *was not* mentioned on the website which is really dishonest. Picking through the forums some people have gotten it to run with Ubuntu (I'm running Ubuntu Studio) with Nvidia cards.

Deep breath. I can use the RX 580 on another build. I cruise E-Bay and got an Nvidia GTX 1060.

It arrived within a few days! And it's DOA.

Maybe the Universe is telling me to stick with Open Source software.

... so you don't have to.

The one that I saw was a security camera video from across the street. It's about a half an hour long but most of the action is in the first seven minutes.

There's nothing to see at first - just a nighttime scene of an empty street - until the camera is turned to the corner where the 'arrest' of Tyre Nichols is happening. The lighting isn't great and the shot is from a distance but we can see a young, fairly thin man being manhandled by 3 rather burly men. Seriously, these guys look like they're twice the young man's weight. Tyre is struggling on the ground and it appears that 3 men are trying to hold him down He's punched several times and viciously kicked at least twice. One officer winds up his kick and hits with such force that the officer losses his balance and nearly falls over. Tyre is then is either pulled upright or breaks free from the offices and attempts to run. His hands are handcuffed behind his back. The officers then grab him and beat him in the stomach and head until he's back on the ground.

When Tyre is relatively inert they drag him to one of the cars and prop him up in a seated position.

I heard they released the body camera videos but I haven't searched for them. Even from a distance the beat down is pretty brutal.

All cars visible on the scene are unmarked. Later in the video more cops arrive. At one point there was perhaps 10 police officers at the scene.

Here's Tyre's website of his photography:

I don't have any words.

So, a little more came out about the boy in Virginia who brought a gun to school and shot a teacher. From the latest reports there were multiple reports the child being either suspected of carrying a weapon and making threats to others - but the administrators ignored the reports.

I'll bet they would have taken swift and decisive action if the boy showed up in a dress. He'd been hustled off of the campus and *authorities* would be called. They would have come down like a ton of bricks on him but having a gun? *yawn*

Our society is sick.

I understand that the M1 Abrams is the biggest, baddest tank in the world and that Ukraine could *really* use them to push the Russian army off of their lands.

The Abrams is also a logistical nightmare needing constant upkeep, jet fuel (literally) to run and extensive training to crew and maintain. It needs an extensive 'tail' of parts and mechanics to keep the 'teeth' of the beast running. Most of the repair shops for the Abrams are located in the US.

The Leopard tank takes more standard fuel, is closer in operation to the Cold war Soviet tanks (which are the mainstay of the Ukrainian army right now) and the closest supply depots are in... Poland? Much closer to the front lines than the Abrams.

Almost everyone who has them (in Europe) is willing to give the Leopards to Ukraine... but *license agreements* with Germany is holding up the works.

Let me repeat that... licensing agreements.

Now I'm not sure how the licensing agreements work with "damaged" or "scraped" Leopard tanks but maybe the Poles would pull some spark plugs... declare the tanks to be "scrapped" and send the "hulks" to Ukraine for "recycling". With overseers (mechanics) to supervise the "recycling".

Don't tell me this hasn't been done before. I'm sure it has.

Or else just f*ck the licensing agreements and send the damn tanks. Don't tell me this hasn't happened before. I'm sure it has.

In the meantime, we should be building the infrastructure to send the Abrams overseas - including having Ukrainian "observers" studying the Abrams tanks *here* and *now* - hell, six months ago! We could have "observers" test drive a few. I would actually be surprised if that isn't happening now... just on the QT. I'm sure there are some American generals and military advisors who would *love* to see how the Abrams stacks up against the Russian T-90s.

Unleash the Leopards. Let them eat Russian faces.

*disclaimer - I am not a expert on warfare licensing agreements of tanks*
