Just to refresh your memory of Catcher in the Rye

at one point Holden sleeps over at a former teacher's house and wakes up to find that teacher patting his head, which prompts Holden to leave.

And I guess we can interpret that scene and the teacher's motive in a lot of ways, but I gotta say, I never expected one of those ways to be "Well, it's obviously innocuous, and the fact that Holden interpreted it as a sexual advance proves he's lying about the 20 times he claims he's been the victim of sexual assault already".

One of my vows running Fabula Ultima was suppress my control freak tendencies, which is why while my master PC chart lists names, core stats, figured stats, defensive stats, classes and which class abilities each PCs, it does not detail what each ability does, nor does it list spells.

My backup email is james@jamesdavisnicoll.com

Added later

My panix email has been restored.

I deleted all my emails by accident

All I need to do to restore them is to "cd into ~/.maildir" to pick a snapshot. In this context, what does that mean? Online search is not helpful.

OK, further explanation followed:

"You may well have deleted the *contents* of your inbox, but the inbox
itself is still there, as is that link in your home directory. So
(from your home directory):

cd .maildir
snapshot

look at the timestamps and pick the most recent one pre-deletion.

Inbox messages will be in the directory 'cur' once you are in a
snapshot. You can copy the files into ~/.maildir/cur (or
/users/jdnicoll/.maildir/cur"

Ok, so the literal command is
cd .maildir
snapshot

NOT
cd .maildir
and then
snapshot

This gets me a list of snapshots.

if I pick one, I get

Changing directory to /net/mail/spool/panix/7/.zfs/snapshot/2025-05-28-2000.hourly/3/jdnicoll@panix.com

What do I do next?

Ooops there goes another 100 million dollars

So Elon and company had another fireworks display... I mean, attempted another launch of Starship.

The launch went well but the Starship tumbled out of control and exploded and the Super Heavy blew up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hardware retrieved: 0. Data retrieved: ??? Estimated cost: 100 million dollars.

Lessons learned? Probably none.

I'm old enough (young enough?) to remember when NASA had disasters of having entire rockets with payload go *BOOM* there were investigations, Senate hearings and people got demoted, fired or disciplined. Elon? Fat chance.

I grew up in the Space Race: Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, the Shuttle. I know NASA has its problems. I know that no bucks, no Buck Rogers. Too often NASA has been squeezed between doing Science, government micro management and providing job programs for select congressional districts. Space X has done a great job with Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy but Starship? It's a near total failure.

Look, NASA was working on reusable space craft back in the 1970s but the material science wasn't quite there yet. They were doing successful launch pad to landing pad experiments. Nothing big, just a 100 feet or so. Baby steps. All cancelled by budget cuts by congress. Space is hard. Space costs money. Space needs research. But when you blow through a 100 million per launch and gain nothing? Forget it.

Welp, they've cast the main trio for the Harry Potter tv show

Which, I'm told, has prompted all the usual gross comments about the girl playing Hermione. Ugh. Why are people so disgusting?

(Also, fuck JKR, but she's not the one being awful inside this complaint. Not to fear, I'm sure she'll find a way to outclass them soon enough.)

Geez, maybe today is not the day to hang out at /r/whatsthatbook....

OP: Hey, looking for a board book series from when I was a kid! It was traditional fairy tales and fables, and the part I really remember is the illustrations! I'm sure if I see those illustrations I'll know it's the right book!

Me: Care to describe these illustrations? Even a little? Were they brightly colorful or more muted, or maybe black and white? Were they realistic or cartoony?

OP: Oh, they looked similar to the hare and the tortoise board game! Like, when I saw that I first thought it was the books!

Me: Oh, I guess you're gonna make me google that instead of providing a link, cool.

Guys, it turns out there are at least five different editions of this game, each one with a totally different art style.

Meanwhile, on a different thread on the same post:

Other Commenter: Could it be Aesop's fables?

Me, silently: WTF, buddy? That's not a suggestion.

OP: Oh, no, it was more colorful than that!

Me, a bit less silently: WTF? Like... what edition are we talking about? You need to help us help you!

All comments are paraphrased, but seriously.

Edit: I am absolutely dying at this point to ask who, exactly, OP thinks Aesop is, but that conversation is not going to go anywhere productive. I'd really better forget the whole thing.
