First world problem

Our washing machine - an eight month old Maytag - died this weekend.

After several long waits on the telephone the repair person will arrive next Monday.

There's a laundry a few blocks away. I haven't used a public laundry in 25 years so it feels a little weird. It's also weird that I lived in this area 35 years ago and used the same place way back when.

But clothes will get washed.

There's literally no laundry's within 50 miles of where I live. I've had to look before now, when our machine died. It might be even further but I stopped looking at that. I thought they'd all gone extinct, with everyone having their own machines now, so hearing you've one on your doorstep that's been there decades is a bit of a surprise.

I guess it's a matter of population density, enough people in a small enough area and you get a high enough frequency of situations like yours that a few laundries can stay in business, surviving off people using them as back-ups.

Plenty of renters who don't have a machine in their building around here; we have a number of commercial laundries. Some of them are pretty gross though, look like they weren't cleaned since they opened.

There are still public laundries in Ottawa, though fewer than when I moved here. I would prefer this trend to reverse itself, especially in case the household machines give up their own ghosts in the near future.

Ugh. Let me guess: 90 day warranty.

Maine has a "lemon" law, though hard to enforce that automatically puts a 4 yr warranty in place on most home goods including appliances.
