When I first set up my 'home office' it was basically sharing a small desk with the computer I use to do some audio work and to edit my youtube videos. I've used this set up before when large winter storms threatened to close the roads - so I'd pack up the laptop that I use at work and carry it home for a few days.

It's been a couple of months now.

I still had an old graphic equalizer and cassette deck parked to one side of the desk. Sometimes I'm asked to dub old cassettes into a digital format and the tape deck gets jacked into my computer audio ports. With a recent purchase of a printer it was getting a little hard to fit everything in and around the desk. The printer I placed on a rather wobbly cardboard box and it was hard to get at the paper tray.

Although I moved the editing computer into my bedroom several months ago I still had it in the back of my mind that this 'home office' thing was going to blow over. Nope. It's not. COVID 19 has settled into the land and I'll be working from home for some time to come. My boss and I totally agree that working from home is the safest option right now. To be honest, I'm *more* productive at home than at work.

The bathroom's closer and the coffee is better.

Tonight, removed the audio equipment and actually set the printer safely on the desk. Any creative audio/video work will be done in my bedroom. I really don't want my work office to be my bedroom - I have enough trouble sleeping as is!

For the record, my 'office' consists of a Mac Book Pro, Monoprice keyboard, a generic wireless mouse - all the usual stuff I use at work. I'm using my own 24 inch Dell monitor via a mini display port to VGA adapter which makes my work *much* easier. The printer is a Brother 2550 which both the Mac Book and my Linux box saw immediately. Haven't connected it to any Windoze boxen yet. Although it's only black and white it's fine for 99% of what I need it for.

Welcome to the new normal.

The 80th Annual City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is starting up!

Bikers of all strips will descend on South Dakota for a big old party. These people don't like wearing helmets... do you think they'll wear masks?

Naw.

The Darwin Awards will be going out fast and furious in two weeks time... and death certificates to others who just happened to be in the same room as super spreaders when they returned.

And no, I don't hate bikers... but it's a damned stupid time to have a big gathering.

From Politico:

"Senate Republicans wanted no additional federal support for the out-of-work, saying business owners are complaining that they can’t hire people because the unemployed make more staying home."

---

If you're being paid sh*t to begin with - why go to work when your chance of getting deathly ill is increased? Not to mention passing that illness on to your loved ones.

***

From KXAN News:

"The health authority for one south Texas County announced the formation of an ethics committee that will screen all patients for survival potential."

----

Death panels have arrived via Republican mismanagement. Or was it always the plan?

Audacity is a cross platform audio recording program. It's fairly simple and it works really really well. It saves the audio in it's own weird format but you can easily convert it in the program to standard audio formats like wav or mp3. You can only record two tracks but you can layer multiple tracks - but it's a bit of a hack. Still, for recording and editing audio it's very handy.

I only recently discovered that along with it's own built in - and sort of mediocre - plugins, it was capable of using some awesome audio plugins from Calf audio. This added lots of functionality to the program and I was looking forward to using more of them.

And of course, the developers removed that ability in the newer versions.

You know, I get it. The plugins were designed for DAWs - Digital Audio Workstations - which Audacity definitely is not. The devs didn't want to deal with the hassle. However, if they didn't want people to useg the plugin THEN THEY SHOULDN'T SHOW UP IN THE LIST OF AVAILABLE PLUGINS!!!

CROMS BALLS!

It would stop confusing people and having them come into the audio forums BITCHING ABOUT PLUGINS THAT USED TO WORK BUT NOW DON'T.

I still have an older copy of Audacity that I will not be updating. It would be fun if some audio geeks fork the project to let the plugins work. That would be a scream.

I keep reading about the COVIDiots and the deniers and the 'FREEDUM MEANS NO FACE MASKS' crowd coming down with the virus and spending days- even weeks in the hospitals.

I keep reading about people at COVID parties where all everyone is going "It's my body" - "It's a hoax" - "It's no big deal" now gasping for oxygen in some clinic waiting to be tested.

I keep reading about officials who insisted on reopening the bars and the stadiums and the schools only to have their hospitals fill up with the sick and the dying.

All they had to do was wear a mask in public, practice social distancing and wash your hands *properly*. Don't go to crowded places where some super spreader can infect dozens at once. Such a burden!

I get that lots of people are out of work. They need to buy food, pay rent, watch their kids. This is way we have societies and government. Rent forgiveness, food aid - these aren't 'hammocks' where people relax and leech off others but *lifeboats* to get them to safety.

I have little sympathy for those who've taken axes to lifeboats then whine when the water reach their necks.

I posted a response to Twisted Chick's post about the connection between the Beatles and a song by The Cream. The next I opened up YouTube and *boom* there was the song mentioned in my 'suggested for you feed'!

I wonder if I'm going to have to up my security on Pale Moon.

To all those people (young and old) on Tik Tok who trolled the tRump by snagging up all those free tickets to his Tulsa rally and didn't show up, I have this message:

Trolling is bad. Bad Tik Tok! No cookie for you.

Oh, my lawn? Feel free to dance on it.

It seems that Trump and the GOP want to role play Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" in Tulsa.

It seems the GOP is bent on committing suicide by COVID-19. There will be innocents in those sickened and killed and that's a shame but to the fools who will go to this super spreader event I extend all my thoughts and prayers.

So I checked Have I Been Pwned... and what do you know? One breach... Live Journal.

I changed my Dreamwidth password even though it wasn't the same as Live Journal - I've almost never reused passwords.

When I left Live Journal I erased everything except an icon of Putin made up as a drag queen.

:-P

In other news, a week ago I was still using my electric blanket at night. Now I've just got a sheet and a few blankets. Sheesh.

Any bets the hydroxychloroquine pills President Tweety is taking are actually sugar pills?

And he doesn't know it?

Either way... double his dose! What does he have to lose?

I like to take old computers and fix them up... mostly for fun. I obtained a laptop (waves at MM) with reasonable hardware and Windows 10 (unactivated) that I've been playing with and installed a viewer for Second Life on it.

And it failed to run because the video drivers were out of date. No drivers were available for Windows 10. The generic drives work for most applications though.

I found this strange since I've installed Second Life programs on far less beefy systems without an issue. Of course those machines were running Linux....

So I downloaded the latest edition of XUbuntu (my favorite flavor of Linux) and turned the laptop into a dual boot machine. And what do you know? The Second Life viewer installed without a hitch in the Xubuntu side of things. And it installed *faster* too.

Chalk up another win for Linux.

I've noticed several things about the people protesting the shut down of businesses to decrease the spread of COVID-19:

They're white

They're armed

They're NOT employed in the service industry.

Basically, they're miffed that their SERVANTS aren't there the SERVE them. I swear, it's the slave owner mentality where they get to be waiting on hand and foot and bitch about how THEY are the ones suffering.

I'd wish a plague on their houses but the way reality works is the plague spreads without indiscriminately and those who would end up risking their lives to serve their masters are the ones most likely to sicken, and possibly die.

Of course, our FREE-DUM lovers don't care. Surplus population and all that.

Trump want to declare meat processing plants to be "essential business" even though they're COVID-19 hot spots.

Protection of the workers health and safety? No mention.

I think I can live without large quantities of meat for quite some time. Sorry Tyson Foods. Go fluff yourself.

Provide protection and healthcare for your workers. Then we'll talk turkey.

From the NY Times... quoting our Dear Leader:

(after hearing about sunlight and ultraviolet on killing virus)

“Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light,” Mr. Trump said. “And I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but we’re going to test it?” he added, turning to Mr. Bryan, who had returned to his seat. “And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, either through the skin or some other way.”

-----

Ever hear of skin cancer from overexposure to sunlight? The research was done on the effects of light on HARD SURFACES. Dumb ass.

Trump continues:

-----

“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute — one minute — and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning?” he asked. “Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

-----

Yeah, let's start breathing in disinfectants and injecting cleaners because that would be so interesting to check that.

His followers have already drunk the Flavor-aide so why not bleach?

They should change the name of his press conferences to "Advice for Future Darwin Award Winners".

So much winning.

I have lots of computes... mostly XP era with modest upgrades and Linux installed.

I have three 'main' computers. My daily driver - this one - a ten year old with a number of upgrades. Behind me in the same room is my media computer where I do most of my You Tube work: music composition and video editing. The third sits in my bedroom where I do the voice overs for the channel and do some music puttering around.

In the past when I've brought my work laptop home and remoted into work, the laptop 'shared' the desk as my media computer. This was fine since I'm not on the media system every day and I could wait to do any video work.

However, my work laptop has been living on the media desk for over a month now and I have to move things around to do any video work. At this point I'll probably move the media system into my bedroom and mothball the other system. The media system will work just fine for audio work.

Since there's no real end in sight to COVID-19 without a vaccine, the new normal seems to be my work computer has taken root in the computer room.

This annoys me.

At least my main system is powerful enough to do most my regular stuff and still run Folding At Home without issue.

Fold my pretty proteins! Fold!

...plumbing supplies.

The downstairs bathroom sink has had a slow drip for some time - I remember seeing it in February - and I was going to get around to it eventually. It wasn't continuous but it was noticeable. I wasn't feeling well during February and March so nothing got done. Today I decided it was time to go look into my spare parts to see if I had anything I might need.

I found one new rubber washer and the old stem. Fortunately, I was able to clean off an reuse the stem that was still in there but I used up my last washer.

The drip has been fixed but after this is all done I'll need to stock up on the correct washers and other faucet parts.

Let me get this straight...

Acting secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly, fires the captain of an aircraft carrier for trying to protect his crew from the COVID-19 virus.... then FLIES ALL THE WAY TO GUAM to smear the captain IN FRONT OF THE CREW?

The man was luck he wasn't snagged by the crew and keel hauled.

Hubris, thy name is Modly...
