The Russian bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Russia has been damaged. Two spans of one of the road section is in the water and the rail side is heavily damaged.

This was a big boom and is a big deal.

The day after Putin's birthday blasting a section of his favorite bridge has to be a blow to Putin and the Russian military. I'm sure that they'll repair it quickly but 12 miles of bridge has been an awfully tempting target. I've read that some experts thought this would never happen as the move would be too provocative and in the long run, the bridge is too valuable to destroy. Yet, it fits with the tactics the Ukrainians have been using to cut off any supplies from Russia - starving the troops of food, fuel and ammo - before attacking. Ukraine appears to leave bridges semi-damaged so troops can escape - on foot. They have to leave heavy equipment behind. This suggest Crimea is definitely in the Ukraine's sights and will be targeted for attacks in a few months.

Of course, I'm talking out my arse right now but it's a reasonable assumption.

So... this amazing musician named Lizzo went to the Library of Congress to check out their flute collection.

Wait... they have a flute collection? How many? 1,700? Hot damn!

Then she got to rock on a crystal flute owned my James Madison? Awesome!

I now know the Library of Congress has a *huge* collection of flutes, and one of them is a *crystal* flute, and there's this black woman named Lizzo who can blow like nobody's business.

So... what's the problem?

I'll tell you what my problem is... I didn't know _any_ of that before!

Now I want to know what else do they have in there? Do they have cellos? Calling Yo-yo Ma! Oboes? (Naw, nobody cares about oboes). Guitars? Saxophones? Can we get a _band_ together?

Hot damn.

PS - my profile pic is me holding a 1972 Hagstom bass guitar. I rescued it from a garage sale - rebuilt the electronics, repaired a large hole in the front and took it to a repair shop to have the neck shimmed. It doesn't play very well but I like it.

I think Florida... and South Carolina, will be needing a lot of Socialism right now. At the moment it will be the Northern states with our freezing snow and miserable winters will pay for it.

Lax zoning laws made housing 'cheap' and the sun and sand made it an attractive place. But Florida is basically built on sand and limestone. Large and expensive areas are just begging to be washed away in the next hurricane - think Miami Beach with it's towering condos just waiting to fall down even without a major storm.

Even Capitalists are fleeing the state. Private insurance companies have been fleeing the state for years. You can lie to the public, you can lie to yourself, but the numbers.... well you can only fudge them so long.

It's not a matter of if another storm will destroy the beach side properties - it's when.

You can deny climate change until the tide starts wriggling around your basement. Oh wait... they build on slabs down there.

Even then it may be too late - limestone is permeable and the sea water will leak in first. With sea level rise there will soon be no fresh water available.

When the banks stop issuing long term loans for buildings of any type, it will be too late. Capitalism will have declare Florida unprofitable and anyone who lives there - tough luck. Only Socialism and strict government planning - cutting carbon emissions, sea walls, building codes and pre-disaster planning - will keep Florida livable.

I'm not sure I'm seeing it now.

From NPR and other news sources, a shortage of CO2 may cause shortages in beer production.

Great googlie moogilies.

In seems the industrialization of beer making uses canned CO2 to give the beer its carbonation instead of using the natural CO2 from brewing. Which brings up a memory of my youth... and a beer commercial.

Schultz and Dooly were animated beer steins - one obviously German and the other Irish that were used to hawk Utica Club beer. Utica is in central New York so it was probably specific to NY state. They had a little song they'd sing:

"Brewing a brew with artificial bubbles,
those carbonated beers of today.
At Utica Club we still take the trouble
to age,
beer,
the natural way.
Utica club, U - C."

Still being made but I'm not sure the whole 'natural way' was a thing to start with.

You'll need to retool but making beer without CO2? Can be done.

I've exited out of my depressive stage and I'm now in one of my rarer manic stages. No, this doesn't mean I'm all happy... I just need to GET THINGS DONE RIGHT NOW. Preferably ALL THE THINGS.

Also, they tend to be more physical things like mowing the lawn, cleaning the basement, painting the basement walls, doing electronic things.

At the moment, I'm handling it well. I'm getting things done that I was too depressed to even start on. It still takes a bit of a push to get going and I may not have the physical or mental energy to do them all. In any case, I want to configure the basement into a crude video studio for my Youtube channel. Up to this point I've been setting up in the living room since it has the most natural light. The basement will need more lighting but that can done after I wash the walls, patch the walls and paint the walls.

I've been reading about a new Conservative dating app tentatively titled 'The Right Stuff'. Even though there's already a non-conservative dating app called 'The Right Stuff'.

Ooopsie! Someone didn't do basic research!

But I thought there already was a conservative dating app... it's called 'Grindr'.

Beloved by many, Queen Elizabeth II has passed. Condolences to those across the pond.

Good luck Charles. I mean it.

Since this suddenly changes our broadcast schedule I had to hump butt to fix our logs. It was stressful but we got most of the immediate work done.

In Ukraine... it's HIMARS O'clock! The Ukrainians are raining fire on the Russians. Supply depots and tanks go boom. Ukrainian forces are taking back villages and towns.

Former president tRump continues to dodge the law with dodgy judges and hair brained excuses... it's just another day ending in 'y'.

I need to get back to writing. In the middle of the novel there's an opera and I need to nail down the outline of the opera. Yes, it's important to the story arc.

From the NY Post:

"New York City public schools are expanding active shooter training to pre-K, 3-K and other early childhood programs, Department of Education officials said Wednesday."

What a stupid, sick society we have. I guess we have to teach kids how to protect themselves against armed intruders because as Texas has shown us, the police won't.

I know, I know... it's called rocket science for a reason. This stuff is complicated and hard.

But the real problem with the SLS is the rocket wasn't designed to generate thrust - it was designed to generate pork.

At this point they have enough hardware to generate... what, three launches? Then what? If you want to be serious about returning to space in a big way you need to either mass produce disposable engines or semi mass produce reusable rockets.

Damn, bring on the F1-B - the updated version of the classic F1-A engine that launched Apollo to the moon. Hire Elon to make them recoverable and reusable. I'm a child of the 60s and damn it I want my space station and my moon base.

-m

Will settle for a moon telescope base because... damn, the moon is dangerous.

Once a year, a local street has a 'street wide' garage sale. Not everyone participates but it draws a fair amount of people. This year, I brought a swag bag with me. Other people have tote bags or even little wagons to carry their loot home with them. It's a fairly long street and it took me an hour to hit all the sales.

I didn't get much: a DVD, a cute little fan, a Dell power brick and a laptop. It's a Lenovo T420s. Originally came with an i5 processor and Windows 7. The laptop was on a table that was rather delicately balanced and when I picked up the lappy to inspect it, the table tipped over dumping half of it's contents on the ground. Most embarrassing. Although the laptop had a charger with it there was a note saying that it needed a new power jack and a hard drive. A little honesty for a change! It was worth the risk at 10 dollars.

Putting my multi meter on the power plug I discovered the charger was indeed dead. I have a multi-adapter for laptops and got the battery so start charging. And it POSTs! but doesn't recognize the hard drive. I had a real time hard time breaking into the BIOS as some of the keys seemed to be funky, but figured out how to boot off a CD or a USB.

I got it to boot all the way into Xunbuntu but it seemed like there was a bunch of stuck keys and things just opened by themselves. By plugging in a USB keyboard I managed to shut the machine down gracefully.

After downloading the manual I checked for the hard drive... and discovered they removed both the hard drive and the carrier for it. So, a hard drive carrier, replacement keyboard and a cheap SSD are going on my Amazon list. The lappy is beat up but I should be able to resurrect it fairly inexpensively.

I decided to get my Alouise books in order and try to finish them.

I have at present:

"To be a Mage" - in rewrites. Alouise as a teenager at the Imperial Mage College. This. Is. Not. Hogwarts.

"Necromancer at Play" - unfinished. And no it's not as grim as as sounds. Alouise is a fine musician and has relatives in the theater.

"Imperial Executioner" - planned. Still kicking around ideas

"Mountains in the Sky" - finished, needs a huge rewrite. Again. This is actually the first book I wrote with Alouise as the main character.

"untitled" - The empire is in crisis. The perfect time to have a mage revolt.

It feels good.

So the 'blue lives matters' ammosexuals have started to target the FBI because the FBI dared to actually *enforce the law* on Donald Trump.

I've heard a lot of rumors about police departments being kind of cozy with the right wing nut jobs. Maybe this will remind law enforcement that these folks *are not your friends* and will kill you in a heartbeat if they could.

Because the laws are for other people - not them. They'll only love police if they're beating on people they don't like, you know, Muslims, Jews, Blacks, Gays.... THOSE people.

It looks like the Nazis down in Florida are going to have another history lesson.

I'm old enough to remember when "parental warning labels" were applied to the sleeves records (real vinyl) back then) because *somebody* thought the music had _bad lyrics_.

This caused all the labelled records to be bought in record quantities.

Now Florida wants to add this label to books they want to ban:

“This Advisory Notice shall serve to inform you that this book jas been identified by some community members as unsuitable for students,” the label states.

Yeah, those are the first books that will disappear from school shelves - taken by the students who want to learn what their parents don't want them to know.

Alex Jones' lawyer screwed up and gave the prosecution two years of phone messages which Alex claimed he didn't have.

Although most of the media has been showing the 'gotcha' moment when the prosecution revealed this... I'd like to see the video of when they but up one of the messages on the Big Screen and asked Mr. Jones to read it out loud.

So what else is in there Alex?

I'm going to need more popcorn.

Bastille Day - Rush

Ooh, there's no bread, let 'em eat cake
There's no end to what they'll take
Flaunt the fruits of noble birth
Wash the salt into the earth

But they're marching to Bastille Day
The guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Free the dungeons of the innocent
The king will kneel and let his kingdom rise

Ooh, bloodstained velvet, dirty lace
Naked fear on every face
See them bow their heads to die
As we would bow when they rode by

And we're marching to Bastille Day
The guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Sing, oh choirs of cacophony
The king has kneeled to let his kingdom rise

Lessons taught but never learned
All around us, anger burns
Guide the future by the past
Long ago the mold was cast

For they marched up to Bastille Day
The guillotine claimed her bloody prize
Hear the echoes of the centuries
Power isn't all that money buys

When the pandemic started there was a big push in my tech channels to get involved in Folding@Home - a distributed computing set up to run protein folding simulations. Life on earth depends on *how* proteins fold when activated and they added COVID-19 to the usual list of important projects (like finding a cure for cancer). You could download work units - have your computer work on them in the background - then upload them back up to the source. Supercomputers are nice but expensive and millions of gaming computers are sitting idle from 9-5. I downloaded and starting folding on my main system - pausing it when I needed to do other stuff my system. However, the next update had a glitch in it and it no longer functioned properly on my system.

Since I've retired my old main system I decided put it to work and check out the software again. After a few missteps on my end - my motherboard *really* needed a BIOS update - I was able to download and successful run Folding@Home.

Pro tip for all you Linux users: before downloading the software from the Folding@Home website, check your repositories first. Ubuntu has it in their repositories which is good because the Debian/Ubuntu software on the website is outdated.

Pro tip for everyone: if you're running with a stock cooler for your CPU - rip it out and install the biggest, baddest cooler you can fit in your case. Using the defaults Folding will run the CPU (and some GPUS) really really hard. I'm using an Arctic Freezer 12 and it's just barely doing the job. Although I have a 4 core 8 thread Xeon I backed it off to just run 4 threads.

I'm not running it 24/7 yet. I want to tweak things then move the system into the basement where it's cooler.

Triamcinolone cream is doing wonders for my skin. It's still dry by the red and angry patches are fading a little. The important thing is that the amount of itching has decreased so I'm no longer absent mindedly *digging* at my skin.

It's a topical steroid. As long as I don't start sprouting excess hair I should be fine.

I should stop at the outpatient clinic for the blood tests. I just had blood drawn at my regular doctor's because of my exhaustion and sleep disturbance but getting more tests shouldn't hurt.

For several months I've been running on 4-5 hours of sleep per night. I blame the new medication for my neuropathy for that. It's not my leg that twitches me awake... it's my whole body! I feel like I'm being launched into the air by my buttocks. I'm easing off the med.

It finally all caught up to me this last week as my body just collapsed. I was able to work from home and nap and get a fair night's sleep for a change. I'm still exhausted but I'm good enough to drive into work and pick up some needed paperwork. I'll maybe spend half a day at work then return home to work remotely... and nap.

Work has been stressful but my boss is great. I also have a bunch of vacation hours coming to me, so it's all good there. I just need a lot of time not doing anything and resting and sleeping.

My brother called me back and we talked. He's a good soul even if he is an NRA nut job.

I explained to him why I flew off the handle and he understood completely. He was rather shocked by my yelling and hanging up the phone at him... but he guessed that bringing up Fox News triggered me and wasn't terribly upset at my reaction.

Still... on some level he just doesn't get it. He's still in the 'both sides do it' phase of thinking. I know there are bad people on both sides but shit man... almost *nobody* on the liberal side of things is brandishing guns and threatening to kill people.

We're family and we've been through things. We're okay with each other and that makes me feel better.
